What happened
A wide-eyed kitten appeared in the lawyer’s Zoom square while Ponton tried to make clear that he was ready to proceed, human face notwithstanding. The judge calmly explained that a filter seemed to be on; Ponton replied that his assistant was trying to remove it, then delivered the line that made the clip permanent.
Where it came from
During a February 2021 hearing in Texas’s 394th Judicial District Court, attorney Rod Ponton joined on a computer with a cat filter enabled. Judge Roy Ferguson, who presided over the hearing, later shared the short court clip after everyone involved handled the technical failure with unusual grace.
Why it mattered
Zoom Cat Lawyer was a perfectly bounded bit of pandemic comedy: an accidental failure, a public participant who took it in stride, and a source published by the judge who was actually there. It made remote work’s weirdness feel briefly harmless.
How it spread
The court-published video escaped into group chats, remote-work conversations, headlines, and the wider pandemic catalogue of video-call mishaps. Its formality made the absurdity sharper: the stakes were real court business, the cat’s eyes were very real too.
