Wordle Score Grid

🟩🟨⬛ became a perfectly spoiler-free way to say, “I got it in three.”

The original is off-site. HAHrchives preserves the story and a route back to it.

What happened

Players began copying the game’s colored-square result into group chats and timelines. It revealed the shape of a solve without revealing the answer, turning a private puzzle into daily small talk.

Where it came from

Josh Wardle released Wordle publicly in late 2021: a once-a-day five-letter word puzzle with six attempts and one shared answer.

Why it mattered

Wordle made sharing deliberately modest again. It was not a leaderboard or a stream; it was one quiet, repeatable invitation to compare a tiny piece of your day.

How it spread

The ritual exploded from a few dozen players to millions before The New York Times acquired the game in January 2022. The share grid became recognizable even to people who had never opened the site.
