2014 / Video / Surreal comedy short
Too Many Cooks
It takes a lot to make a stew. A pinch of salt, a dash of dread.
The original is off-site. HAHrchives preserves the story and a route back to it.
What happened
Theme-song credits keep adding cast members, genres, and increasingly alarming intrusions. The familiar television opening becomes a trap, and the loop becomes the joke.
Where it came from
Writer-director Casper Kelly made Too Many Cooks for Adult Swim’s Infomercials block. The 11-minute short begins as an aggressively repetitive fake sitcom opening and refuses to stop escalating.
Why it mattered
Too Many Cooks is a great example of the internet adopting an artifact rather than creating one from scratch. It found the exact point where repetition becomes unbearable, then kept going until it was art.
How it spread
After its late-night broadcast, the official online release spread through social networks, blogs, group chats, and the kind of link people sent with no explanation except “you need to watch this.”
