Where it came from
The Lonely Island released “The Creep,” featuring Nicki Minaj and an introduction from John Waters, as an SNL Digital Short on January 29, 2011.
Why it mattered
It is a broadcast sketch engineered like a shareable music video, with a hook built for quotation and GIFs.
How it spread
The official release carried the short beyond broadcast and made “do the creep” a portable visual gag.
