Tables

A driver’s-ed teacher refuses to explain why a woman’s job is “tables,” making the non-answer the whole joke.

The original is hosted off-site; this page provides context and a link to it.

What was this?

Students keep asking what the woman in the film does for work. Their teacher keeps insisting that her job is simply “tables,” then grows more upset each time the explanation becomes harder to accept.

Why it spread

The sketch’s repeated “Tables!” and “I can’t know how to hear any more about tables!” escaped into GIFs, captions, and quote threads, where the word became a deadpan answer to any question nobody wanted to explain.

What happened

Where it came from

Netflix released I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson’s second season in July 2021. In the “Driver’s Ed” sketch, Tim Robinson plays a teacher screening a supposedly ordinary safety film that keeps detouring into Patti Harrison’s furious table-rental business.

Why it mattered

Tables works because the joke stays structurally small: a mundane question gets the most confident possible non-answer, then everyone commits harder to pretending that clears things up.
