Strong Bad Email
A masked wrestler checked email on a fake computer and accidentally built one of the web’s great comedy universes.

What happened
A recurring Flash character started answering emails in small installments. The answers established running jokes, invented phrases, and sent viewers back into a site full of hidden pages, games, and other cartoons.
Where it came from
The Brothers Chaps introduced Strong Bad’s email-answering segment on Homestar Runner in 2001. Each short began with a fan message and immediately ignored it in favor of Strong Bad’s terrible advice, homemade games, and side characters.
Why it mattered
Strong Bad Email showed that the early web could support a universe, not just a single hit. It was episodic internet comedy before “web series” became a business category—and the site itself was part of the joke.
How it spread
Strong Bad Email turned a personal character website into a ritual. New installments arrived through direct visits and word of mouth, while quotes and in-jokes traveled through message boards, school computers, and AIM conversations.
