2002 / Video / Pre-YouTube viral video

Star Wars Kid

One of the first videos to prove that the internet could make a private moment global overnight.

The original is off-site. HAHrchives preserves the story and a route back to it.

What happened

The clip was remixed with lightsaber effects and moved from file-sharing networks to blogs, forums, and news sites at extraordinary speed for the era.

Where it came from

Ghyslain Raza filmed himself practicing lightsaber-style moves at his Quebec high school in 2002. The tape was later found, digitized, and distributed through Kazaa in 2003 without his permission.

Why it mattered

Star Wars Kid is internet history with a hard lesson attached: early viral culture could be enormously creative and enormously cruel. The archive keeps the context, not just the joke.

How it spread

It became a defining pre-YouTube viral video—an example of culture spreading by downloads, mirrors, instant messages, and message boards instead of a single centralized platform.
