What happened
Gökçe’s knife work, sunglasses, and delicate bent-wrist sprinkle were too specific not to become a gesture people could reproduce. Screenshots and short clips rapidly became a shorthand for excessive finishing touches.
Where it came from
Turkish chef Nusret Gökçe posted a video of himself preparing steak and dropping salt from his fingertips in January 2017. The flourish gave the internet an instantly named character: Salt Bae.
Why it mattered
Salt Bae is a clean example of a real person becoming an internet character through one repeatable physical gesture. The web did not need an explanation—it just needed the sprinkle.
How it spread
The video crossed Instagram, Twitter, meme pages, news coverage, sports broadcasts, and brand posts. “Salt Bae” became both a person and an all-purpose reaction format.
