Where it came from
Swedish creator Saskia Cort first collected answers to the Roman Empire question on Instagram in 2022. The prompt’s defining internet moment came in 2023, when it broke into English-language Reels and TikTok and people began filming the answers from partners, fathers, brothers, and friends.
Why it mattered
The Roman Empire Question made an invisible private habit into a shared game. Its durable gift was not a fact about history or gender; it was a useful, funny phrase for the things our brains keep returning to when nobody asked.
How it spread
