What happened
The banana danced. The song repeated. The rest of the internet immediately understood that it needed to make the banana dance somewhere else, too.
Where it came from
The Flash animation paired a dancing banana with “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” by the Buckwheat Boyz. Ryan Gancenia Etrata and Kevin Flynn posted the animation to Offtopic forums in early 2002, then it reached Newgrounds that March.
Why it mattered
Peanut Butter Jelly Time is a perfect early-web recipe: a borrowed visual, a borrowed song, a tiny Flash file, and a remix instinct that made every other character a possible dancing banana.
How it spread
The animation moved through humor sites, message boards, Flash portals, and eventually YTMND, where it spawned a long afterlife of character swaps and remixes. A Family Guy reference helped carry it into mainstream television in 2005.
