One blue shark missed the choreography and immediately became the most beloved thing at the Super Bowl.

What happened
The costume, the huge stage, and the slightly off-kilter moves made a tiny part of an enormous pop production feel strangely human. Screenshots, GIFs, jokes, and fake explanations appeared almost immediately.
Where it came from
During Katy Perry’s Super Bowl XLIX halftime performance, two shark-costumed dancers joined “Teenage Dream.” The dancer on Perry’s left moved with a very different energy from the synchronized cast, and viewers rapidly named him Left Shark.
Why it mattered
Left Shark is a lovely reminder that the internet often finds its favorite detail beside the thing everyone was officially meant to be watching. A polished halftime spectacle accidentally made room for a goofy underdog mascot.
How it spread
The moment escaped the broadcast through Twitter, reaction posts, and remixes. In 2018, dancer Bryan Gaw explained that the character included freestyle movement: the apparent mistake was a deliberately imperfect clowning choice on an absurdly large stage.
