What happened
The clip became a recurring punchline after it was paired with videos of people failing, getting interrupted, or being gently dismissed from the internet stage.
Where it came from
Brad O’Farrell uploaded a clip of Fatso the cat playing a keyboard to YouTube in 2007. The footage itself was filmed years earlier by Fatso’s owner, Charlie Schmidt.
Why it mattered
Keyboard Cat helped establish the reaction-video language that still shapes how people respond to clips online: one piece of media becomes a reusable emotional caption for another.
How it spread
Its edit-friendly structure made it one of the defining early YouTube reaction formats. The phrase “play him off” became shorthand for ending an awkward moment.
