2012 / Video / Global dance craze
Gangnam Style
A horse-riding dance turned a Korean pop video into the whole internet’s choreography.
The original is off-site. HAHrchives preserves the story and a route back to it.
What happened
The video arrived with bright suits, strange locations, a dead-serious dance move, and a hook that required no translation. Soon people everywhere were performing, parodying, and trying to explain it to relatives.
Where it came from
South Korean artist PSY released “Gangnam Style” in July 2012. Its lavish parody of Seoul’s Gangnam district and instantly copyable horse-riding dance were built into one official music video.
Why it mattered
Gangnam Style proved that online video could make a non-English pop song a shared global event. The joke, dance, and music did not need a local translation—the internet supplied its own.
How it spread
YouTube recommendation, embeds, news coverage, flash mobs, and endless remakes pushed the song across language and platform boundaries. It became the first YouTube video to pass one billion views.
