What happened
Laipply moved through decades of dance styles and pop songs in one escalating stage performance that made perfect sense to send to somebody with the subject line “watch this.”
Where it came from
Speaker and performer Judson Laipply developed the routine for live shows, then uploaded a version to YouTube in April 2006 after students asked him to put it online.
Why it mattered
Evolution of Dance is a clean early-YouTube origin story: a performer with no influencer playbook found an audience because the internet could suddenly carry a stage act everywhere.
How it spread
The clip climbed from thousands of views to viral scale almost immediately, at a time when YouTube itself was still teaching the public what online video could be.
