What happened
Neil Patrick Harris played Billy, an aspiring villain who recorded blog updates between songs about a freeze ray, a crush, and his relentless enemy Captain Hammer. The project treated a web release as the event, not as a lesser version of television.
Where it came from
Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, Zack Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen made the three-part musical independently during the 2007–08 writers’ strike. It premiered online over five days in July 2008 through its official site.
Why it mattered
Dr. Horrible made the web feel capable of hosting an original, polished, creator-led musical on its own terms. It was ambitious but still made for people refreshing a browser—an unusually good snapshot of what online video was becoming.
How it spread
Viewers passed the acts around, waited for the next installment, traded lyrics, and helped prove that an independently funded internet release could turn into a shared pop-culture appointment. Its soundtrack and later editions extended the life of the experiment.
