What happened
The image’s perfectly timed grin made it a natural Photoshop template: place her near any catastrophe and imply she is quietly responsible.
Where it came from
Dave Roth photographed his daughter Zoe in front of a controlled firefighter-training burn in North Carolina in 2005. He uploaded the photo, titled “Firestarter,” in 2007.
Why it mattered
Disaster Girl shows how a still image can become a reusable sentence. The joke is not the fire; it is the expression that makes every future disaster look suspiciously intentional.
How it spread
The photo circulated through image-hosting, photography, blog, and meme sites before it became one of the defining exploitable-image formats of the late 2000s.
