Dancing Baby
A looping 3D baby became one of the web’s first global “what am I looking at?” files.

What happened
A diapered baby looped through a strange little dance. The animation was technically clunky, slightly uncanny, and impossible to explain to anyone who had not already seen it—which made forwarding it the obvious next move.
Where it came from
The 3D animation, created by Michael Girard, Robert Lurye, and John Chadwick, began moving through forwarded email chains in 1996.
Why it mattered
Dancing Baby is a useful reminder that “viral” did not begin with platforms. A small file, passed hand to hand, could still become a shared cultural reference point.
How it spread
Before algorithmic feeds, the Dancing Baby traveled person to person through email, personal pages, and copied files. It eventually jumped into television and mainstream culture, including Ally McBeal.
