Howard Davies-Carr uploaded a home video of his sons Harry and Charlie to YouTube in 2007 so family abroad could watch it.
Why it mattered
Charlie Bit My Finger made the case that the new web did not need studios or celebrities. A tiny family moment, uploaded for practical reasons, could become communal memory.
How it spread
The ordinary, unscripted moment became a global early-YouTube hit and a template for the kind of home video people expected to find when someone said a clip had “gone viral.”
