What happened
The site gave a familiar children’s-TV character a conspiratorial new life through absurd image edits, captions, and a deliberately crude personal-web aesthetic.
Where it came from
Dino Ignacio launched Bert Is Evil on March 30, 1997, as part of his Fractal Cow site. His digital collages put Bert into fake dossiers and altered historical scenes.
Why it mattered
It is an early landmark of the image-remix grammar that would define meme culture: one instantly recognizable face, a visual contradiction, and an authorial joke people could keep redistributing.
How it spread
Bert Is Evil traveled through forwarded links, fan copies, and early-web awards; its later notoriety showed how quickly a simple altered image could detach from its maker and circulate globally.
