The BeReal Notification
⚠️ Time to BeReal. ⚠️ A random two-minute countdown briefly became the most recognizable interruption on everyone’s phone.
The original is off-site. HAHrchives preserves the story and a route back to it.
What happened
The premise was both strict and oddly low-stakes. You could retake the picture, post late, or miss the window, but the ritual still made every alert feel like a tiny shared fire drill: show the room, show your face, see what your friends were actually doing.
Where it came from
BeReal launched before 2022, but its cultural Moment arrived that year: one unpredictable daily notification asked everyone in the same time zone to post a front-and-back-camera snapshot within two minutes.
Why it mattered
BeReal did not end curated social media, and it did not need to. Its 2022 appeal was a more modest novelty: one collective nudge toward an unglamorous moment, with the ritual itself becoming the joke everyone recognized.
How it spread
The app’s breakout was swift enough to make BeReal memes, campus habits, and “Time to BeReal” interruptions familiar well outside its user base. In 2022 it reached the top of Apple’s social-networking chart and won an App Store award.
